DrySpool Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

DrySpool is an Android app for 3D-printing hobbyists, published by NoobVenture — a personal brand and small independent operation based in Norway, built and maintained by gamenoob92. For privacy-related questions, use the contact form on the main site.

2. The short version

DrySpool stores everything locally on your device. There is no account, no login, no server, no analytics, no advertising. We do not collect, transmit, sell, or share any data about you or your spools.

3. What stays on your device

Everything you enter or import in DrySpool is stored in the app’s private storage on your phone, including:

  • Your spool inventory, drying sessions, locations, printers, dryers, and print profiles.
  • Photos you attach to a spool — whether picked from your gallery or taken with the in-app camera (one or several per spool) — copied into app-private storage and never uploaded.
  • QR codes you generate and labels you print — created on-device only.
  • Preferences such as your display name, date format, and your low-stock threshold.

This data does not leave the device unless you explicitly export a backup file (see section 7 below) or use “Save to gallery” to copy a spool photo into your phone’s own photo gallery (see section 4).

4. Permissions we request and why

  • Camera — used in two ways, both entirely on-device: to scan QR codes on your own spools and storage locations (the feed is analysed live and never saved), and, when you choose to, to take a photo of a spool. A photo you take is saved only into the app’s private storage and is never transmitted.
  • Save to gallery (optional) — if you tap “Save to gallery” on a spool photo, the app copies that single image into your phone’s public photo gallery, in a “DrySpool” album, so you can use it elsewhere. This only happens when you ask for it. On Android 10 and newer no storage permission is needed; on older versions the app requests write access solely to save the picture you chose.
  • NFC — only used to read Bambu Lab RFID tags embedded in spools, decoded entirely on the device. Tag contents are written into your local spool record. Nothing is sent off the device.
  • Photo picker — uses Android’s built-in PhotoPicker API, which means we do not request broad storage access. You pick the exact photo you want attached; the app copies that single image into its private storage and never reads anything else.
  • Internet — used solely so the Google Play in-app update system can check whether a newer version of DrySpool is available. No application data leaves the device through this permission.
  • Notifications — used only to alert you on this device: when a drying session you started has finished, when spools are due to be re-dried, and when a filament is running low. All reminders are scheduled and shown entirely on-device; nothing is collected or sent anywhere.

5. What we do not do

  • We do not require, support, or store any account or login.
  • We do not embed Google Analytics, Firebase Analytics, advertising identifiers, or any third-party tracker.
  • We do not upload or stream the camera feed, your spool photos, or NFC data off your device.
  • We do not collect crash reports beyond the anonymous, opt-out aggregate data Google Play’s built-in “Android vitals” provides at the platform level. Those reports do not contain personally identifiable information or app content.
  • We do not sell or share any data with third parties, ever.

6. Google Play and in-app updates

DrySpool is distributed via the Google Play Store. The Play Store itself handles distribution, billing (if you ever choose to make an in-app purchase), and the anonymous diagnostics described above. Google’s handling of that data is governed by their own privacy policy at policies.google.com/privacy.

7. Backup and restore

DrySpool lets you export your library as a .dryspool zip file via Settings → Data → Export backup. You choose where that file goes — your phone’s storage, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, an email attachment, or anywhere else Android’s document picker offers. Once the file leaves the app, the destination service’s own privacy policy applies to that copy. DrySpool itself never uploads the file for you.

8. Your rights and how to delete your data

Because nothing is stored off-device, there is no remote copy of your data to delete. To erase everything DrySpool holds, either:

  • Open Settings inside the app and tap Reset all spools to clear inventory and drying sessions; or
  • Uninstall DrySpool, which removes all app-private storage including photos and the database.

Note: any spool photo you explicitly copied to your gallery with “Save to gallery” lives in your phone’s own photo storage, not inside the app — uninstalling DrySpool does not remove those copies. Delete them from your gallery if you want them gone.

9. Children

DrySpool is aimed at hobbyist 3D-printer owners and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child is using DrySpool in a way that involves personal data being shared with us, please contact us.

10. Third-party references

DrySpool’s Bambu RFID reader relies on publicly reverse-engineered tag formats documented by community projects (OpenSpool, Bambu-Research-Group, queengooborg). The app reads tags entirely on the device; it does not communicate with Bambu Lab, the named community projects, or any other third party. DrySpool is not affiliated with or endorsed by Bambu Lab.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as DrySpool evolves — for example if a future version adds an opt-in feature that involves the network. The “last updated” date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
